Inside the Basket - Zack Griego, Pilot
December 10, 2024
Each year, Balloon Fiesta welcomes pilots from all around the world, launching 500+ balloons, making the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta® the largest gathering of hot air balloons in the world!
In this month’s Inside the Basket, Zack Griego, pilot of a 90 Aerostar Balloon named "Dixie”, shares more about his ballooning story and gives advice to those who are thinking of becoming a pilot.
1. Give a brief overview of your ballooning background.
I have been attending the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta since I was a baby. My dad was a crew chief for a balloon, and it became a yearly tradition for our family. As I grew older, my passion for balloons only deepened, and I knew from the age of six that I wanted to become a pilot. Every year, I would ask my mom to take me to Fiesta, especially to get one of the bee pins, as the bees have always been my favorite. In January 2023, I earned my private pilot’s license, followed by my commercial license just a few months later. Today, I’m living my dream, flying ride balloons every day.
2. What inspired you to become a pilot?
My stepdad, who has been a professional ride-balloon pilot, was a huge inspiration for me. Watching him live his dream and flying alongside him whenever I could fueled my own desire to pursue a career as a professional pilot.
3. What balloon do you pilot and what is the story behind it?
I fly a 90 Aerostar balloon named Dixie, which is the most beautiful balloon I’ve ever owned. I purchased her the day before the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta to have a balloon to compete with. On Fiesta’s opening day, I flew Dixie for the first time and achieved an incredible milestone, placing 5th in the competition at my very first Fiesta.
4. What advice do you have for someone who is thinking about becoming a pilot?
Follow your dreams with unwavering determination. Becoming a pilot requires hard work, but the incredible experiences and adventures you’ll have along the way make every effort worthwhile.
