Inside the Basket - Nate Herrera, Balloon Fiesta guest, and Visual Storyteller.
April 29, 2025

For Albuquerque locals, the Balloon Fiesta is an integral part of life in October, as hundreds of balloons fill the skies each morning.
In this month’s Inside the Basket, we hear from Nate Herrera, local student, Balloon Fiesta guest, and visual storyteller. Nate reflects on his Balloon Fiesta experience and the joy of sharing Albuquerque's vibrant culture through social media.
Find Nate’s videos from the 52nd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta on Instagram, here.
1. Give a brief overview of yourself and how you came to attend the 52nd Balloon Fiesta.
My sister and I had a day off from school for Fall Break, so we decided to head to the 52nd Balloon Fiesta. Having lived in Albuquerque all our lives, this wasn’t our first Fiesta, but it’s always such a special tradition for us. Each year feels unique, and we couldn’t pass up the chance to experience it again.
2. What is your favorite part about attending Balloon Fiesta?
My favorite part of Balloon Fiesta is standing close to the balloons as they inflate and feeling the warmth from the burners. On chilly mornings, it’s the perfect way to stay warm while being surrounded by the incredible sights and sounds of the Fiesta.
3. Can you tell the story of your favorite Balloon Fiesta photo or video you’ve taken/created?
My favorite video that I have taken at the Balloon Fiesta is from the early morning balloon launch. The balloons began to be unpacked and rose around the park as we huddled around a balloon to heat us up. The sun began to rise as I pulled out my phone to look at the Sandia Mountains. I held my phone stationary as a Rainbow Ryders balloon flew across the frame as those in the basket waved at people below. You are able to read on the colorful balloon, the text, “✔ Bucket List.”
4. You have a unique style of sharing the Balloon Fiesta (and Albuquerque) experience through social media. Walk us through your creative process!
Sometimes I plan ahead and choose a specific place to capture videos, but other times, I simply take videos in the moment when the timing feels just right. I focus on shots that are easily recognizable like balloons glowing against the sunrise or crowds cheering during a launch and aim to make viewers feel like they’re right there with me. My goal is to capture the magic and energy of the Fiesta in a way that transports people into the experience.
5. Which hot air balloon is your favorite?
My favorite balloons are the classic Rainbow Ryders ones with the phrase "Bucket List" and the New Mexico yellow design. I love them because they represent the excitement of people checking “riding a hot air balloon” off their bucket list—it’s such a meaningful and joyful part of the Fiesta experience.
